The first time I ever got on a plane, I was 23 years old. It was a domestic flight going from Johannesburg to Durban and it wasn’t even that long, but after the trip, I knew that I wanted more.

I couldn’t believe that it had taken me so long to ever get on a plane or that before that moment I had never been to the province of KwaZulu Natal. It was through no fault of mine really… if I think about my parents like most parents didn’t prioritise travelling for leisure. It simply had no place on their list of priorities. See, it costs money to travel and I figure that the way most Black peoples’ finances are set up, travelling never makes it onto the to-do list because there are just way too many important things that need to be done with their hard-earned money. So I understand.

But after I had my first taste of a travel experience, I was sure that I would do it and that for my children, I’d work hard to make sure that travelling made it onto the priority list. I realised that the experience had left me richer and a better person and as I did more of it, I learnt more and truly got a chance to marvel at the world in all its glory.
"So it is my submission that travelling deserves a place slightly higher on your priority list."
Everyone deserves to be shaken by the beauty of God’s creation in different places, to be left confused by a foreign language with all its tones and melodies and to be taken aback by how lifestyles differ from place to place. Travel gives you something nothing else (except maybe books and a great imagination) can give you; life-changing perspectives.

So it is my submission that travelling deserves a place slightly higher on your priority list. Save up for it, treat it like all other important goals in your life and your life will be better for it. There are a million reasons why travelling is important and super good for you, but I hope these three have what it takes to inspire you to save up for that trip to Tanzania! (or anywhere in the world)

It’s Fun And The Change Of Scenery Is Good For You

As humans, we tire easily of seeing the same and doing the same things. A change of pace or scenery often gives that reboot we often need to reach new levels within ourselves to be the best versions of ourselves we can be. What better than a picnic on top of a majestic cliff in Mpumalanga or being woken up by the soothing sounds of the sea waves somewhere in Venice?

It Expands Your Knowledge Of Other Cultures

The most interesting and life-enriching thing about travel is experiencing people and life through other peoples’ lens. To learn about the culture or to experience a different lifestyle helps you mould your outlook on life in its entirety. Doing it physically as opposed to watching it on TV or Instagram makes ALL the difference. That gift of interacting with people who hold different views and believe is exclusive to travel and well worth every cent you spend on travelling.

Travelling Gifts You With Amazing Life Lessons

Travel stories make your life rich. The best way to describe it is to imagine being surrounded by your grandchildren one day as they listen attentively as you tell them about your adventures in India or how your husband proposed near the Eiffel Tower or how you got lost in Ghana and got saved by a prince… That’s the kind of magic only travel can give you!
