The cost of renting a house in the country, especially in Nairobi is ridiculously high. Although we might all want to live in spacious mansions, practically speaking, a decent single room is all most people can afford, and that’s okay because single rooms don’t have to be dull, cramped up and boring.

You can easily transform your single room into a beautiful little heaven with proper planning and arrangement and of course following these few tips on how to arrange your single room.

Cut The Clutter.

Since you are already low on space, it’s important to get rid of any unnecessary items in the house so as to create more space for the important stuff.

Do you have clothes that you no longer wear, shoes that no longer fit, or old furniture that you hope will find some use someday? If you will never use them again, you need to either give them away or throw them out.

Go For Flexible Furniture.

Flexible furniture that can be used in more than one way and save on space is the way to go when making the best out of your single room.

Instead of bulky wood furniture like wardrobes and shoe racks, try flexible plastic or metallic wardrobes and shoe racks which are foldable and can be stored away when not needed.

If you can get an affordable sofa bed that you can use as a sofa during the day and can be converted into a bed at night then go for it. You can also go for a foldable bed or chair to save on space.

Additionally, get a kitchen table with multiple shelves so that you can place your gas cylinder or cooker on the top and your utensils and other kitchen things below it.

Partition Your Room.

Using curtains, you can divide your room and create the illusion that you have more than one room.

You can separate the kitchen and sitting area with a curtain and create a private bedroom for yourself that guests can’t access when they visit.

Maximize On Shelves.

Shelves are ultimate space savers and go-to decorators, especially for single rooms.

If you can install wooden shelves in your room, then go for it and target odd corners that would otherwise remain plain. If you have shelves in your designated kitchen area, arrange your foodstuffs and kitchen supplies on them. You can then convert the other shelves into bookshelves and organize your books on them to create an elegant look.

If you are renting a room, it might be impractical to install permanent shelves but that doesn’t mean that shelves are out of the question. Get yourself some plastic storage shelves that you can take with you when you move out.

Make It Bright.

Dark colours absorb light and tend to make a room appear smaller while bright colours reflect light and make a space feel more open and airy. For this reason, go for brighter shades when decorating your room and ditch dark shades.

Also, make maximum use of natural lighting. Get sheer curtains for your windows to allow more light into the room.

You can also install mirrors on the walls of your room that will reflect light and make the room brighter.

Place Your Bed Near The Window.

Another tip that will come in handy when arranging your single room is to place your bed next to the wall, near the window; this will create an illusion of a bright, spacious room.

If you have a television, mount it on the wall directly opposite to the bed, if your wall can support a television, just do away with the tv stand or entertainment unit.
