3 Fun Activities To Replace Gym With

You can skip the gym and still fetch the body of your dreams

If this week is the third week you’ve found yourself postponing your “long overdue”  trip to the gym, it may very well mean you ain’t feeling the place. The good news is if you know that winter left you with a kilogram or two you want to get rid of, then you know you need to put in some work to achieve it. Knowing you want or need that change is the first and necessary step. After that, if the gym isn’t your type of place then you’ll be very happy to know that your summer body isn’t exclusive to the gym. There are plenty - maybe even more fun - alternatives available.

Other people love the gym, they live for super-fast aerobic songs or the electro-sounding remixes of R&B jams to hype them up as they move from one machine to the other. They love to join people with a common cause as they burn calories and inhale each other’s sweat and stuff…

Others, like you and I, are maybe a bit shy or terrified that we’ll be defeated by the treadmill “in front of phum’kwabantu” and we are not sure we’ll be able to recover from being publicly dribbled by that cycling machine. However, that doesn’t mean you have to settle into your “winter body” for keeps if that wasn’t the aim.

In fact, if you can find an alternative that works for you, then you probably won’t struggle to commit and you and your summer body will be reunited before you know it. So why not try one or two of the following alternatives for size and see how they sit on you?

Just Move: Walking And Hiking

Here’s the thing, the basic ingredient necessary for you to shed some weight is movement. You need to get moving so that you can help your body burn calories. At the gym, you optimise movement with the help of machines and probably tricky moves that the gym guru will teach you. But, even by yourself or with your friends and family, you can get into the habit of moving purposefully to achieve weight loss and improve your fitness in general.

Mayo Clinic says if you add 30 minutes of brisk walking to your daily routine, you could burn about 150 more calories a day. Of course, the more you walk and the quicker your pace, the more calories you'll burn.

So get moving. Schedule a morning brisk walk session or make it fun and walk with your kids in the afternoon around the block. Plan fun hike dates followed by breakfast with your bestie on weekends. Soon, you’ll be walking faster and may even take up jogging, and just like that, you’ll be well on your way to being a fitness bunny without setting foot in the gym.

Get Sporty: Swim Or Box… Hell, Take Up Tennis!

If you are one of the lucky few who can afford to buy some “gym” essentials like a boxing bag, get it. If you have a pool, don’t just use it for cool house parties and get together, let it aid you in your quest to lose some kgs and to be certain dress size and level of fit.

As opposed to feeling like exercise is a duty and a task, doing a beginner version of the sport you’ve always fantasized about being great at can be a huge motivation for you to never miss a session. This will be killing two birds with one stone type of gig, you’ll be fuelling a passion you have for the sport and simultaneously fetching yourself that Serena Williams kind of bawdy!

Have Fun: Dance

Before you get excited and think I’m talking about listening to your favourite DJ at the local club or shisanyama while showing off your newly-learnt amapiano dance moves… this is not it. That kind of dancing usually has alcohol and bad eating habits to accompany it.

The type of dancing referred to is the kind that is designed to help you enjoy yourself while you burn calories and fat. Just like aerobic or cardio exercises, dancing does the job but makes you feel like you are a sexy salsa queen.
