Winter is fast approaching in the country and the only thing that we find comfort and warmth in are our dishes. There are meals that only South Africans can make and master and they cannot be found anywhere else in the world. If they are, they are not anything close to what South Africans can do. Let’s take a look at some of the South African traditional foods to warm our bodies and our homes during this difficult and coldest season of the year.

Tripe and Dumplings

People from the North call it dombolo and Mogodu and for the West and East, it’s dombolo and ulusu, but this is one of the best and mouth-watering meals in South Africa. It doesn’t only warm one’s tummy, but it also warms the entire home with its warm and inviting aroma. If you find yourself in someone's home and they're in the process of making this meal, sit down and continue chatting, play with kids if you have to, kill time because you're about to be served a meal.

Samp And Beef Stew

If there’s one thing South Africans love, it's their meat. Samp and Beef stew is another South African beloved dish that’s perfect for winter. Samp takes time to prepare but it’s always worth all the effort in the end. You can make your samp creamy, add some beans if you like. It’s warm, filling and one of the best dishes you will enjoy with your family and loved ones this winter

Steamed Bread With Lamb Stew

As we've mentioned above, whatever you make for a South African during winter, make it meaty. You can play with your stew buying adding all your favorite ingredients. There really are no rules when it comes to stews. Steamed bread,  like most comfort and winter meals, takes a bit of time to prepare, but the results will be seen in the joy of your loved ones when they devour this meal.

Pap and Vleis

This is another South African popular meal enjoyed by almost all cultures and different tribes in the country. The pap (made with maize-meal) and sausage meal is quick to make and can be enjoyed at get-togethers such as braais, house parties and at home with your family and loved ones. It’s warm, delectable and it screams South African. You can never go wrong with this meal.

Amagwinya AKA Vetkoek

If you grew up in a household that didn't make amagwinya, then you missed out on one of the best things in life. This dough bread, deep-fried is one meal that has brought joy to our lives. It's tasty, warm and easy to make. You could fill it with stuff it with your favourite fillings, from burgers to hot chips, or mince. This meal has kept South African homes warm and happy for decades.
