Having watched a lot of TV shows and movies where people have been scammed of their money, through online shopping platforms. So, I have never been a fan of shopping on the internet. But… that was pre-pandemic when I could get up and go shopping anytime, without worrying that I would contract a deadly virus from touching the hanger. Obviously, life changed and so did some of my reservations about online shopping. However, while I’ve definitely had an outlook transformation, it took me a while to trust what I am doing when I am online and more than that to actually get the most of the experience, especially when shopping for clothes.

Most women will tell you just how stressful it is to shop for clothes. It really is nothing like what the Hollywood blockbusters make it out to be. We are not all giggly and happy, moving from store to store and accumulating paper bags filled with designer clothes. Nope… for most of us, we are struggling to find jeans that fit us just right and moving from one store to the other is out of the question because we know clothes that look good on us are only in selected stores.

Finding the right fit with the right fabric that hugs you in all the right places, for the right price isn’t easy even in physical stores, so you can imagine just how harder the situation gets when you have to move your whole shopping experience online. Hopefully, these tips will be helpful.

Get Familiar: Platform

Before you jump into the deep end of online shopping, read up on the environment. If you’ve never shopped for anything online then you may first need to know the dos and don’t of the internet. For example, if you know nothing about how to protect your credit card details and how to ensure that you are paying on a secure site, you will live to regret it.

Just as robbers could come out of nowhere and snatch your bag in Jozi, an online hacker can come out of nowhere, steal your payment details or identity, hack your credit cards and make your life hell.

Get Familiar: Shop Talk

When you were walking into a store, taking your favourite dress from the hanger, paying cash for it and walking out, the process was simple. However, while the online looks to replicate the simplicity of that method, it isn’t that simple. There is fine print everywhere regarding the return policy, insurance (in case your shopping bag never arrives), indemnity if your details get stolen etc.

Go read up on your potential favourite online store’s policy. Better yet, if you are shopping from international shops, it may be worth getting the 411 on exchange rates and import rates and things like paying customs.

Get Familiar: Fabrics and Sizes

One of the most annoying things about shopping online for clothes is the lack of a fitting room. This creates a situation where you have to know your body super well if you are going to buy the right size and love it when you finally put it on your body.

To help you do this better, measure yourself (regularly) because those will be more accurate than you think the size “medium” you wear may not be the same as the size medium that the shop has. Depending on where the clothes are made, the sizes are different. Also, depending on the material (stretchy or rigid) of whatever you intend on ordering, you may need to size up or down.

Most Important Of All, Make Sure You Don't Get Scammed

Ever since majority of the things being done day to day have shifted to online, people have taken advantage of that fact and have devised ways to scam people online. You may find a shopping site with clothes that have tickled your fancy and the best part of it all is that the prices don't hurt your pocket, think twice because that deal may be too good. The first thing you ought to check is when the site was established. If it was recent then that is probably a scam but if it has existed for quite a while and there are people talking good things about it, then it probably is legit. You need to make sure you do not fall for the scam and find yourself buying 'air clothes'.

Pro Tip: Always... and I mean always read the reviews. They will save you!
