Except for that classic red lipstick that most of us own, a lot of black women are intimidated by bold coloured lipsticks. Our idea of switching up often sees us gravitate towards the browns, maroons and a little bit of hot pink when we are feeling funky. However, Black women can pull anything - and I mean anything - off, so there’s really no reason to avoid the bright, bold colours when you do your next lipstick stock up.
Here’s the thing, like many other notions we’ve grown up with Black women
have always been told to stick to the darker shades.
“Maybe not to our face, but even in the beauty ads that filled the magazines we paged through as teens, the bright yellow and striking engine red lipstick was reserved for the white models or the light-skinned Black models.”
So, Black women have had to unlearn those notions that seemingly deemed them unworthy
of certain products or colours where make-up is concerned. Now that we know that we can do no wrong when it comes to trendy makeup
looks - or fashion or Tik Tok dance challenges or anything else on God’s green earth - it’s time to rock the previously forbidden colours.
Here are some cool 2021 trends to help you add some colour to your lips (even if it’s for your Instagram snaps because living in a pandemic
means wearing a mask that covers your beautiful lips when you step out).
Orange Is The New Red
The orange colour has become popular among Black MUA recently. The colour - no matter the shade
- just works amazingly on melanated skin. The cool thing about orange is the fact that it is not the same old, classic crimson
shade, but it still feels more grown-up and wearable than a bubblegum-pink hue. You can rock orange lips to just about any occasion and you’ll still look stunning.
Glow Up Means Gloss Up
There was an era where we were all obsessed
with glossy lips. Then matte lipsticks took over and we abandoned our gloss. However, gloss is back with a bang because now it can be used to help your lipstick colour of choice pop!
See, gloss can elevate your lipstick, too, whether you opt for a neutral shade or a bold hue. After applying lipstick
and lip liner, dab just a bit of gloss
on the center of your bottom lip, then press your lips together and like US rapper Lil Mama said “My lip-gloss be poppin!”.
Nude Lips And Busy Eyes Work
Nude lipstick is not a trend, it is just as classic as red lipstick and for good reason. It's an easy way to look put together
without putting tons of effort into your makeup look and it works well with anything else you may be doing on other parts of your face like bold eye makeup.
A nude shade gives your pout the perfect balance of warm and cold while complementing your complexion and allows that colourful
eyeshadow you have to stand out.
Mix And Match For That Ombre Look
Remember that time in school when you were learning about colors and the color changes you get when you mix a certain color with another? Well, you can now put that knowledge to use. The Ombre effect is achieved when you line your lip with a lip pencil of a certain color, or even lipstick, followed by applying a different color of lipstick on top but not fully covering the first. I have seen this style as a go to for many MUA's and I must admit it gets me every time. It just gives off a sexy vibe which I looove.
